Estrela Mountain Dogs, Sulley and Cindy

Introduction: Estrela Mountain Dogs are Livestock Guardian Dogs, originating from the Serra Da Estrela Mountains in Portugal. Their job is to protect the flocks of goats or sheep from wolves and bears. Estrela are an ancient breed still used for their original function today. In the UK Estrela are still considered to be a rare breed.

They are very loyal and affectionate to those in their family and trusted wider circle.

They can be aloof and wary of strangers.

Estrela are amazing with children, very gentle.

They can live with and play with other dogs well as long as they have been raised to do so.

As a home boarder my dogs spend their days with lots of canine friends every day. Estrela are intelligent but this comes with a mind of their own.

They are independent but can be very highly trained. We say owning an Estrela has to be a partnership. They will work with you, not for you. Something any potential owner needs to know - Estrela like the sound of their own voices, they can be noisy. My dogs will bark but also will settle when asked.
