Wareham Forest
See the video where I take a walk around a section of Wareham Forest. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at the Stroud Bridge Forestry England (free) car park which is located on Bere road (3 miles South East of Bere Regis & 3 miles North West of Wareham).
Postcode: BH20 7PA
Car park: Free Forestry Commission car park at Stroud Bridge
Length of walk: 4 miles
Food/drink stop: Silent Woman Inn - Dog friendly
Wheelchair access? No
My 4 mile circular walk initially takes me Northwards to explore Woolsbarrow Fort – one of the smallest Iron Age Hill forts in Dorset. There are some super 360 degree views to be had at the top of the Fort. (Map at bottom)
I then make my way Southwards along the Wareham Forest Way before turning East to join the Hardy Way. This takes me to my next destination – the Morden Bog Nature Reserve which is one of the largest valley mire habitats in England.
After investigating the remains of Decoy House (partly hidden in woods), and after passing a number of bee hives, I set out to explore the area around Decoy Pond.
Eventually I manage to find the remains of the overnight shelter building that would have been used by the Decoy man many years agop. The decoy pond is now overgrown – it became disused in 1856! There was a “path / track” out to the building & pond but great care needs to be taken not to stray away from it as the area is around there is a bog.
I then start my homeward journey back to my car by heading west, past a new pond, some old boundary stones and the Wareham Forest Tourist park.
I then drive back along Bere road, towards Wareham, and stop of for refreshment at The Silent Woman Inn.
Love from our Dog Friendly Dorset member Dave Ford and Logan the whippet
